Web Browser Compatibility

The ETEC Website was not written for any specific Web browser or operating system. This site was designed to meet W3C standards, aiming for the goal of cross-platform compatibility. Each browser has its own set of quirks so the site may not look exactly the same from browser to browser.

Supported Browsers

Mozilla FirefoxMozilla Firefox

Version Tested: 1.0 and higher

Platform: Mac OS X, Windows XP, Linux

Rating: 5/5

Comment: This is the best cross-platform browser available in terms of standards-adherence and usability. Available free of charge from Mozilla.org.

MozillaMozilla

Version Tested: 1.7 and higher

Platform: Mac OS X, Windows XP, Linux

Rating: 4.5/5

Comment: This is the 2nd best cross-platform browser available in terms of standards-adherence and usability. It's a touch slower and bulkier than Firefox, but it features a built-in mail client and addressbook. Also available free of charge from Mozilla.org.

SafariSafari

Version Tested: 1.0 and higher

Platform: Mac OS X only

Rating: 4/5

Comment: Safari is a great browser, but it's only available on Apple's Mac OS X. The standards-adherence and usability are quite high, and the browser itself is snappier and more responsive than Firefox or Mozilla.

OperaOpera

Version Tested: 8.5 on Linux

Platform: Available for Mac OS X, Linux, Windows, Unix, and more

Rating: 4.5/5

Comment: Opera is available for multiple platforms and has a loyal user base. The browser is now completely free of charge, and it is FAST and largely unaffected by the security woes of other high-profile browsers. This browser gets high marks for speed, platform variety, and standards compliance. Available from Opera.com.

Internet ExplorerInternet Explorer - Windows

Version Tested: 6.0 and higher

Platform: Windows only

Rating: 2/5

Comment: Because of its deplorable security track record, it is not recommended that you use Internet Explorer at all. Like pretty much every other piece of Microsoft software, Internet Explorer 6 is barely adequate at complying with published industry standards, and because of this, you may find visual layout errors.

KonquerorKonqueror

Version Tested: 3.3 and higher

Platform: Linux and Unix

Rating: 4/5

Comment: Konqueror is the built-in Web browser for the K Desktop Environment (KDE) commonly installed on Linux and Unix workstations. The browser is lighter and quicker than Firefox or Mozilla, and the page rendering is visually appealing.

Unsupported & Untested Browsers

Internet ExplorerInternet Explorer - Mac

Version Tested: 5.x

Platform: Mac OS X

Status: Unsupported

Comment: IE on the Mac is no longer supported by either Apple or Microsoft. Most of the pages in this site display incorrectly on this browser, and you are strongly urged not to use the browser on this site or any other, due to its rendering bugs and glaring security issues.

NetscapeNetscape

Version Tested: None

Platform: Available for Mac OS X, Linux, Windows, Unix

Status: Untested

Comment: From version 6 and up, Netscape has been based on Mozilla's code base, so it will likely work with this site. Any version of Netscape prior to version 6 will likely not work. Development moves at a much faster pace on Mozilla and Firefox (and this includes security fixes) so it is recommended that you opt for one of these over Netscape.
