SUMMARY

In an effort to expand access to learning, the number of colleges and universities that offer online classes continues to increase. In order for online learning environments to be successful, course design should consider the community-centered aspect of learning. Instruction should take advantage of technology, as it can help build and maintain online learning communities. Students should feel a sense of trust when interacting with other members of the online learning community, both other students and faculty.

In creating a sense of community, student involvement and engagement in the learning process increases. Learning, therefore, is both active and interactive. Hiltz (1998) believes that the goal of online learning is "...to build a learning community and to facilitate the exchange of ideas, information, and feelings among the members of the community" (p. 7).
