Key Points

Reflecting on Margaret Riel’s statements (September 2001), one can extrapolate the following key points concerning knowledge-centered design:

  1. Knowledge-centered design starts with the teacher identifying the relevant knowledge content that students will learn;
  2. This is followed by the effective arrangement of knowledge content (and essential skills) in meaningful ways through the structuring and scaffolding established by the teacher; and
  3. Knowledge-centered design demands that the teacher be able to match knowledge content with both media and delivery mechanisms.

A recognition of and attention to these key points will aid the instructor in designing a better online learning environment around the essential component of knowledge content.
