Online TIES Summary

The goal of the Technology Intensive Enhancement Series (TIES) of courses is to develop technology proficient teachers who will be good role models for their students and colleagues in infusing technology into curriculum. The courses are well-designed, technology intensive, teacher education courses that are web and video-enhanced. They are designed to meet the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) for Teachers. Each course requires participants to use the NETS for Students and their state content standards in developing their own technology intensive lessons. Essentially the goal of TIES is to have teachers emerge from the program with a general upgrade of their personal technology skill set and an ability to integrate those technology skills and resulting teaching philosophies into their K-12 school environment.

The TIES series is an evolving program in its third year of development. The program changes based on input from students, the ETEC Department, and the Hawaii Department of Education. We are pleased to announce that the 2005-2006 TIES program will allow the most flexibility for students. Teachers will be able to tailor their sabbatical study to best meet their individual needs. TIES can comprise of fully online, face-to-face, or a combination of online and face-to-face courses. Additionally, teachers can participate in TIES through a Fall, Spring, or a 1-year sabbatical. All teachers who are interested in applying are encouraged to participate. TIES is primarily designed for teachers who have been granted a sabbatical leave. The new flexibility of TIES empowers the teacher to create an individualized plan, which is tailored to their current skill set and areas of interest.

For the 2006-2007 academic year, TIES will consist of a 15-credit series. Although TIES is not yet a UH BOR certified program, the Department of Educational Technology is exploring that avenue. Currently, a Certificate of TIES Completion is awarded to all successful candidates at the achievement of 15 credits in ETEC courses. All teachers will enroll in 5 Educational Technology (ETEC) classes, with a combination of the 400-level and 600-level courses available to them. In general, teachers enroll in four 400-level courses and one 600-level course to meet the requirements of TIES. To better accommodate requests for more advanced skills training in technology integration, students may be able to substitute 600-level courses for the more fundamental 400-level courses if they demonstrate that their skills sets and interests warrant such action. The information in this packet addresses the general upgrade of technology skills relevant to teachers with a minimum to moderate level of technology skills. (Note: More specialized programs tailored to individual students needs will be negotiated once teachers are granted sabbaticals). Credits gained during TIES can be applied to the ETEC Master's program.

Study Plan Pathways

The TIES program is designed to help you take the steps to build upon your previous knowledge and experience. Because there is a wide range of expertise and various sabbatical lengths among teachers joining the program, suggested study plan pathways have been identified to assist you to get the most out of your study. One of the major reasons TIES was developed was that many teachers simply want an overall, general upgrade of their technology skills and gain experience with a variety of technologies. The recommended plans listed below are designed to address those needs, and therefore offered as the most commonly chosen pathways. However, if a teacher already possesses medium to high mastery and has a focused area of interest, the flexibility of TIES allows them to choose alternative courses to meet their personal goals. Once you have been awarded a sabbatical you can work with the TIES Advisor to create a more individualized plan. Note: Although anticipated that these courses will be available, they are always subject to change.
